Smithsonian Gardens Orchid Collection and the Encyclopedia of Life

A recent collaboration between Smithsonian Gardens and the Encyclopedia of Life has given new life to many of the EOL’s blank orchid pages. Whereas before, a search for a more uncommon orchid would turn up a page with no images, now many of these unfruitful searches yield beautiful images of both catalog and professional photos from the Smithsonian Gardens Orchid Collection.

Images from the Smithsonian Garden’s collection are pulled from the Digital Assets Management System, which houses the entirety of the collection images, past and present. Many of these photos are also found on the Smithsonian Collections Search Center, which displays pertinent collection information about each of SGOC’s living accessions as well as a catalog image or images. These records are searchable by scientific name, flower color, range, among other options. Start your exploration here!
