From the initial idea of the image to the finished product on paper in the customer’s hand, this section explores color and imagination within the enterprise of gardening. Primary sources consist of historic images published in catalogs, newspaper advertisements, and other formats, as well as glass plates, 35 mm slides, and photographs that were not published. Also found in this section is a lesson on the process and techniques used to capture images between 1880 and 1930, and how archivists today go about assigning dates to such materials.
