General
Bucky's Run, named after the owners' late Labrador, was created since 2009 from an overgrown and unruly landscape that was removed and was replaced with over 100 tons of stone, more than 150 cubic yards of garden soil, and more than 400 trees, shrubs and multiple varieties of perennials. The landscape styling of the one and two-thirds acres property includes stone-edged perennial beds with Japanese maples, hornbeam hedges, flowering shrubs, conifers, a small waterfall with a birch grove and rain garden, and a dry stream bed. There is a layered shade garden in front of the house that features native and pollinator plants. Cutting flower beds in back include echinaecea, Agastache, leucanthemum, gaura, and lavender. A tractor path encircles the property to enable delivery of materials and maintenance while a cattle guard in the front driveway and deer fencing around the perimeter protect the gardens. The pea gravel driveway is bonded with a permeable epoxy so rainwater is absorbed. A seven- foot-tall iron sculpture "A Prayer to the Universe" by Berry Bate and a custom iron arch and lantern embellish the bluestone walkway to the front of the house. The kitchen and breakfast nook windows overlook a path bordered by perennials and flowering shrubs, planted containers, a fountain and a birdhouse behind a hornbeam hedge. There are several gravel pathways through the front woodland and shade garden. A sitting area includes an eight-foot stone slab bench. Here there are beds with layered plantings of ferns, perennials, unusual conifers, shrubs and understory trees under the canopy of older trees. On the lower side of the property behind the house there is full sun exposure. There is a stone patio with a lap pool, an echinaecea cutting garden, and an abstract concrete statue of a dove. Further down there is a wide expanse of lawn and shaped beds. Restored iron gates provide access to the lawn and gardens. A small birch grove surrounds a rain garden with casual seating below a water feature with two waterfall drops. At the back of the property there are more plantings of Japanese maple, perennials, evergreens and flowering shrubs with a movable tubular sculpture by David Caudill. Persons associated with the garden's design: Hunter Stubbs (landscape designer/consultant, 2009-2014), Anne Higgins (landscape designer/consultant, 2012-2019), Randy Burroughs (landscape architect, waterfall and water feature consultant, 2016-2017), Barry Bate (sculptor), David Caudill (sculptor), and Chuck and Eileen Hutchinson (owners).
