General
The design of the gardens and features of the five-acre property have been the ongoing work of the owner since her family acquired the 1939 New England style home in 1958. Although much of the area has been built up since then this property backs up to a golf course with a view of the Rocky Mountains, and the first project was removing a large juniper hedge to reveal that vista. A new swimming pool and pool house were built closer to the house than the original, and a greenhouse was added more recently for starting dahlias and herbs that will be transplanted outside. The garden style is floral and lush, complementing the style of the house, and includes overflowing planters and window boxes, a vegetable garden, terraces, curving walks, and a planted border that softens a long retaining wall in back. Ivy grows up on side of the front of the house, recalling a childhood spent in New England. Two half-century honey locusts flank the sidewalk in front and an historic hackberry shades a dining terrace in back that is adjacent to a solarium with views of the garden in inclement weather. Additional trees include apple, walnut, crabapple, an alpine grove, and a very old cottonwood. The long border over the linear retaining wall includes roses, hydrangeas, variegated daphne, Korean spice viburnum, and many annuals and perennials. Delphiniums are a favorite flower in all the garden beds. Planting pots and window boxes are filled in season with geranium, begonia, caladium, and trailing ivy. Several birdhouses hang near the vegetable garden on the less formal side of the property. The owner is a lifetime member of the board of the Denver Botanic Gardens which named a water lily, Nymphaea, Bea Taplin, for her. Persons associated with the garden's design: Bea Taplin.
