Glen Foerd Community Garden has provided a welcoming space for gardeners and wildlife since its creation in 2017. Historically part of the Foerderer family estate, the garden retains grape vines planted there by Florence Foerderer in the early 1900s. Compost bins, an apiary, and twenty raised bed plots round out the garden’s productive spaces. Garden traditions have historically included an annual end-of-year harvest gathering in addition to consistent monthly workdays. Because the garden is located on a historic estate, garden coordinator Lisa Carpenter explains, “there’s always people on the property” who are curious about the garden. Indeed, between the beekeeping and native insects like Carolina mantises, the garden provides a learning space for the budding naturalists among gardeners and visitors alike. Under the auspices of the Glen Foerd Conservation Corporation and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, the Glen Foerd Community Garden will continue to provide education and nutrition to the Torresdale neighborhood.
