The Lewis – Clark State College Learning Garden
The Lewis-Clark State College Learning Garden located in Lewiston, Idaho, was started in 2012 by a class at Lewis-Clark State College (LCSC). The plot of land was once the site of a house that had burned down, and those students wanted to transform the area into something beautiful. After the first few garden beds were established, a new position was created at the school for a student to manage and contribute to the garden. The first student in charge helped shape much of what our garden is today, including its shade sails and outdoor classroom setup. The space now features a whiteboard and seating for about 30 students to enjoy classes outdoors.
The garden has become a place with strong community ties. In 2016, students decorated our little library, which is uniquely made from an old school kitchen sink. Many community members visit the library often, spending time chatting and enjoying the garden together. Recently, a community member added a roof to the library to keep it dry and protect the books. In addition to the library, the garden hosts a vibrant rock-painting and trading activity. We provide paint supplies and rocks for anyone who wishes to participate, and we’ve received painted rocks from all over. Visitors can also paint a brick in the garden
to contribute to a longer-term art piece.
The plants in our garden include a variety of berries, flowers, and anything a passerby might plant. We have four trees, two apricots and two cherries, along with plenty of mint and tomatoes. Soon, the garden will feature new beds for sunflowers and lavender.
The sunflower bed is a tribute to the man who once owned the house that had burned down. After his house was gone, sunflowers would still pop up in random places. Now, this garden bed will celebrate both its legacy and the growth of our garden.
In addition, we are moving forward with a focus on accessibility with a plan in the works to add a wheelchair pathway and educational posters. A major project is also in the works to connect the garden to the college campus through a short nature walk. The LCSC Learning Garden continues to grow as a cherished space for students and faculty.
