From the desert to the sea, from the mountains to the plains, North America is made up of distinct ecological regions known as biomes.
Each biome has its own unique plants and animals that, over time, have evolved and adapted to each other and their environments, creating a delicate ecological balance.
Humans have disrupted this balance, but we can help restore it by learning to be better stewards of the environment.
Across the country and around the world, Smithsonian scientists are studying biomes to better understand how they work and how we can help protect them.
What’s the Difference?
A biome is a large region that has similar plants, animals, and other living things that have adapted to the conditions in this area.
An ecosystem is a community of living and nonliving things that interact with each other in an environment.
A habitat is a place where plants and animals normally live.
