Residents of West Philadelphia decided to transform the vacant lots where row houses once stood. Collaborating with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, gardens were created on this site.

During the 1980s, students from the University of Pennsylvania worked with neighborhood gardeners to create a design for a community space in this garden, transforming it into “an oasis in the neighborhood offering the community a place to grow foods and knowledge.”
